The Lane Place was built for Henry Lane in 1845 in what is now called the Elston
Grove Historic District. Lane represented Montgomery County as state representative,
U.S. congressman, governor and U.S. senator. His stature as chairman of the
National Republican Convention in 1856 helped secure the party's nomination
of Abraham Lincoln for president in 1860.
Lane lived continuously at Lane Place, located near his brother-in-law, General Lew Wallace, until he died in 1881. His wife, Joanna Elston Lane, lived there until her death in 1914. Their niece continued to preserve the property for many years until it became a museum home.

Some inventions stand the test of time. Others are discarded for better ideas and loftier principles. But even the rejected are worthy of our attention for the clues they offer into our past.
Hailed when it opened in 1882 as an Industrial Age solution to the problem of housing prisoners safely and efficiently, the Rotary Jail of Montgomery County was one of only seven known prisons of its kind ever built in the United States. By rotating a mechanism on which a two-tiered turntable pivoted, a jailer could bring one of 16 pie-shaped cells to the opening, allowing a prisoner in or out.

Can sustainability go hand in hand with luxury? Just ask Bruce Grosbety ’85.
As general manager of
the new Terra Resort in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, he is banking on a hotel that’s
simultaneously hip
and green. “We’ve created a very contemporary-style hotel different
from traditional mountain
resorts,” he explains of the facility, which is awaiting LEED (Leadership
in Energy and Environmental
Design) certifi cation. “We’re attracting a very diverse group of
guests, people who probably live a very green life, and also the hotel guest
who’s living in an urban environment.” Adds Ashley Morgan, director
of sustainability, “We’re also trying to attract the group that
doesn’t necessarily know it’s a green suite, but they have that
moment, a sort of an epiphany, when they realize they don’t have to sacrifice.”

You
probably know that obesity is one of the most pressing public health problems
in Indiana, the United States, and the world. Diet is a major factor in this
chronic disease. Did you know that 50% of cancer deaths are preventable by modifying
lifestyle factors, including appropriate use of available screening for early
detection of cancers? Were you aware that 20 years ago, research established
that one-third of cancer deaths are related to diet? If you already knew these
things, do you ever wonder why we do not all adjust our lives to behaviors that
would keep us healthy?
